As regular readers will know, tomorrow night is the last night for Sala Montjuïc which is the fantastic cinema under the stars up at the castle. It's a great way to see some fantastic films (after a quick short film) and as tradition, the last night - tomorrow night - is always left open to a vote.
So this year's options were The Dark Knight, Inception and Insomnia. Two great films and one of Al Pacino's to forget, to be fair. Now, according to the website there has been a prety clear winner with 42% of the votes with Christopher Nolan's Batman sequel the Dark Knight the winner. However, I'm hearing rumors of a bit of rigging going on with the votes as you can see from the following video (give it a few seconds):
If Partridge is having trouble, how the hell are the rest of us supposed to vote properly as well ?! I mean, please?!

Sala Montjuïc Returns
For those of you who've been following a while, you'll know I always like to plug the annual events that I think are well worth the mention. Many people find my blog from many different sources, and the very way a blog is set up (chronologically) means that it's good to refresh the evergreen content. So here goes with another one...
Sala Montjuïc has been running for a couple of weeks now, and is a great way to spend a summer evening watching some quality cinema under the stars. Movies are projected onto the walls of Montjuïc castle and spectators sit in the gardens to watch. Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 22:00 there is a short film first (15 minutes) and then a mix of classic cinema and relatively new releases. For a full review of the programme, check the official link above, and then as usual, there is a vote for the final film - this year between Inception, The Dark Knight and Insomnia.
Entrance is only 5 Euros, and you can hire a deck chair for 3 Euros, or take along your blanket and picnic basket instead. In times of crisis, this is a cheap night out!

Open Air Cinema with Sala Montjüic
First of all, a slight apology for those regular readers who might be wondering if I've dropped off the face of the earth. Nope, just been watching EVERY World Cup game as well as working so haven't had much time to blog! Anyway, on with the post...
Given the heat wave we're experiencing at the moment (about time!), it's ok to sit in air-conditioned cinemas watching back to back showings of the Eclipse Saga (no really, my sister in law did it recently) but what better way to plant yourself in front of a big screen than Cinema under the stars? In case you missed it last year, Sala Montjuic is back.
Take a really old castle, some pleasant surrounding gardens a projector and a bloody good list of films, and voilà! You have Sala Montjuic. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, it's worth the hike up to Montjüic for a concert, some shorts and a decent film - all in original version, too, so no cringing at the dubbed actors. This year it's started a little later, but runs until 6th August.
As usual, the range of films on offer are fantastic, and offer a real round-the-world of modern and classic cinema including Peru, Japan, Sweden and some classics from USA and UK: Charlie Chaplin, Stanley Kubric's Clockwork Orange, Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla and Revolutionary Road. For full listings of the cinema screenings, see here. There's also a chance to vote for te last screening on the 6th August between 3 films: 25 Kilates, Smoking Room or El Truco del Manco. At 5 Euros per ticket, it's a snip (3 for a deckchair, but you can take your own blanket and a couple of bottles of wine). And the best thing is, you don't need to nip outside for a cigarette!!
The castle is easily accessed via the Funicular at Parallel and the cable car, or there is a bus service from the pencils at Plaça Espanya from 20:30 and back down when the film is finished. Easy Peasy.

Sala Montjüic - Cinema Under the Stars
June is a great month to be in Barcelona. If it's not enough for festivals galore, the Midsummer Solstice that is Sant Joan, the sunshine has finally arrived, and from the 29th of June, the Sala Montjüic returns.
After my recent post, guessing if people still do go to the cinema, what better way to see a decent film in original version than on a deckchair at Montjuic Castle?
For just 5 Euros (and 3 for a deckchair), you can join 2,500 other people on the lawns of the castle and enjoy some live music, a Catalan short film and then some great original version cinema. Screenings are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10pm, but get there early to avoid disappointment - tickets are also on sale in advance cia ticktackticket. This year's line up sees the show kick off with Martin Scorsese's excellent "The Departed" and follows with classics such as Hitchcock's "The Birds", 1923's "Safety Last", and the Cohen brothers' No Country for Old Men - which saw Spanish actor Javier Bardem pick up the best Oscar for a supporting role in 2008.
Other entries from Sweden, Iran, Germany/Turkey and of course Spain feature, with Pedro Almodovar's "Volver" screening on the 10th July. This year's programme seems to have an excellent choice with even Pixar's WALL·E making the grade. The last performance is even open to vote on the website - 3 musical films choosing from Joy Division's 2007 film, Neil Young's Déjà Vu and Leonard cohen's I'm your man. It's a great way to spend a mid week evening in summer, and easily accesible via public transport on the Funicular, and cable car.
